Volvo Cars Invests In Circulor

Earlier this month, the investment arm of Volvo Cars invested in blockchain technology firm Circulor. This move was made to increase traceability of elements and minerals in their new battery-powered lineup, such as the Volvo XC40 Recharge P8.

"The Volvo Cars Tech Fund was launched in 2018 and invests in high-potential technology start-ups around the globe. It focuses its investments on strategic technology trends transforming the auto industry, such as artificial intelligence, electrification, autonomous driving and digital mobility."

Circulor will help bring 100% traceability of the chemical element cobalt found in batteries. The firm will also aid in the traceability of other minerals such as mica and potentially traceability of carbon, helping Volvo Cars in their efforts to become carbon neutral.

New Volvo on Call App Features Are 'Electrifying'

As Volvo Cars continues to move towards carbon neutrality, plug-in drivers are now further encouraged to use the all-electric capabilities of their hybrid and electric cars. With new features in the Volvo on Call application, drivers are now able to track various metrics regarding their car's CO2 footprint.

The app's current features will allow users to see "how much distance they have driven in fully electric mode and their electricity and fuel consumption." Later this year, additional features will include monitoring fuel-cost savings as well as the ability to measure their carbon footprint.

Worldwide Volvo Cars Sales Begin To Normalize

Like most industries, the automotive industry was affected severely by the coronavirus pandemic. Volvo Cars sales figures were down by huge margins, suffering 14.1% less revenue.

In June, the last month of the company's fiscal first half, sales figures began to return to normal. Volvo Cars saw growth in both the United States as well as China, recovering to only a 3.0% sales drop in China.

Interest did pique, however, for Volvo's rechargeable lineup. The Volvo Recharge brand saw demand increase by 79.8%. Volvo Cars also saw interest grow for their online sales channels, a trend becoming the norm while many dealerships open under strict regulations.
