CSI: Volvo Style

The acronym CSI might remind you of the hit television series, Crime Scene Investigation. However, in this context, it’s actually representative of Volvo’s Crash Scene Investigators.

Volvo’s CSI team celebrated 50 years this past month since they were established in 1970. The team investigates accidents involving Volvo’s around the world, diving deep into understanding real-world scenarios that eventually lead to greater innovation in safety.

Crashing Cars to Save Lives

Another piece to upholding a leading position in safety innovation is the Volvo Cars Safety Center. According to Volvo, the crash lab “crashes at least one brand new Volvo a day.”

The Safety Center celebrated its 20th anniversary just yesterday. From the day that it first opened to modern times, the Safety Center remains to be “one of the most advanced crash labs in the world.”

You might remember how Volvo dropped multiple new model cars from a height of nearly 100 feet. The Safety Center aimed to simulate extreme crash scenarios, a step towards a future where no one is killed in a modern Volvo.

Volvo Invests in… Gaming?

You might notice a common theme with many of the efforts Volvo has been putting forth recently. Innovation in safety has given Volvo the opportunity to change the consumer driving experience for the better, and while slower is typically safer, Volvo shows no signs of slowing down.

Volvo recently invested in what they call “the ultimate driving simulator” which consists of a simulation experience that provides real-time haptic feedback through a suit and a virtual reality headset to immerse the driver.

The simulation is aimed at utilizing Volvo’s safety features in a real-life scenario without any risk involved on a number of different ‘maps’.
