Volvo's XC40 Recharge: Small SUV, Big Price... or Not?

Posted by Max Rundlett on 23rd Oct 2020

As leaders of innovation, it was no surprise when Volvo announced their plans to move towards a renewable future. This of course included hybrid and all-electric models, one of which being the XC40 Recharge.

This past week, Volvo announced the starting price for their first EV. The XC40 Recharge is set to start out at $54,985, a price point that puts it over $3,000 more than an entry level Model Y. However, the Volvo becomes more attractive after it’s $7,500 tax credit which the Tesla is no longer eligible for.

Tesla's Model Y is the small SUV’s most direct competitor at the moment. With the XC40 Recharge you’re getting 402 horsepower and 486lb/ft of torque, more than the Model Y which was rated at 384hp and 375lb/ft. These specs propel the small SUV to 60mph in just 4.7s, a tenth of a second quicker than the Tesla. Power is delivered to all 4 wheels through two motors, similar to the CMA Polestar 2 it shares a platform with.

Those specs might be more important to an enthusiast, but Volvo does their best in going above and beyond whenever possible delivering a comfortable driving experience. As said to have some of the nicest interior qualities out of any new car, the XC40 Recharge is no exception. Optional Harman Kardon speakers surround the driver who sits in a sea of Nappa leather and nubuck upholstery. Volvo kept to their sustainable roots, using recycled plastic to finish the interior carpeting - an idea which was introduced by Polestar earlier this year.

When it comes to electric cars, a topic of concern is always regarding their range which is incredibly fair due to emerging charging stations around the globe. Currently, the XC40 Recharge is rated for a modest 200 mile range. However, it is estimated that within just 40 minutes, battery capacities will be charged to 80%. This leaves plenty of time to grab a bite to eat and refresh yourself before hitting the road again. These stops can even be pre-planned through the Google-supported navigation system as it suggests stops along the way to your destination.

Production for the XC40 Recharge has already started and U.S. deliveries are said to arrive January, 2021, just 3 short months away. If you’re interested in learning more about the options and specifications regarding Volvo’s XC40 Recharge, visit their site for more information.
