Volvo Moves Toward a Digital Future

The COVID-19 pandemic has shifted the way business is done in modern times. More people are working from home and subsequently shopping from home as well. This requires physical places of business to shift their strategies to cater to these needs. Volvo is doing so by shifting their buying and leasing processes online.

With the acquisition of Stockholm-based dealership Upplands Motors and a planned takeover of Bra Bil, Volvo aims to create a seamless offline and online experience allowing customers to begin the purchase process online and visit dealers only when necessary. This movement is an experience Volvo hopes drives 50% of global sales by 2025.

Safety Extending Past the Crash

Volvo is known by many for it’s industry leading safety standards; standards that are in relation to a vehicle’s accident protection and prevention. But what about personal health?

In 1976, the introduction of the three-way catalytic converter used in conjunction with a “Lambda” sensor revolutionized the automotive industry. Nearly 45 years later, the SPA chassis is following in the footsteps of it’s much older 200-series relative.

The manufacturer’s newest technology is dubbed Advanced Air Cleaner. Using a special insulation, the amount of fine particulate (PM 2.5) is filtered out by up to 95 percent. The technology includes a PM 2.5 sensor which is rising in popularity as air pollution is a growing concern for many areas.

Charging a Sustainable Future

Volvo’s goals for health and safety extend far past the personal health of their customers. Climate change is well documented and Volvo plans to do it’s best to minimize any future global effects. The Science Based Target initiative (SBTi) has approved Volvo’s climate action plan to become carbon neutral by 2040.

The SBTi is a collaboration between major environmental groups which showcases companies that strive towards science-based objectives. The acceptance process is stringent and companies must demonstrate a genuine plan that will put them at the forefront of environmental sustainability.

An endorsement from the SBTi increases Volvo’s brand equity. Due to this gained value, Volvo has set up a Green Finance Framework where the company will be able to collect funds “earmarked for climate-related and environmental projects.” The first green bond was issued shortly thereafter giving the company EUR 500m for electric car development.
