Recommended upgrades, maintenance parts, and accessories for the second-generation Volvo XC90. Fitment varies by model year, engine, suspension, brake package, and other vehicle equipment, so review the notes on each recommendation or send us your VIN if you are unsure.
Before you order: confirm three things
Model year
Exterior and tech fitment changes across the generation. Common breakpoints include the 2020 exterior updates, 2023 dash-cam fitment, and the 2025.5 facelift.
Engine
Performance fitment varies by engine. T8 plug-in hybrids use different charge-air and exhaust hardware than T5, T6, B5, and B6 models.
Suspension and brake package
Volvo used multiple front and rear rotor sizes, and air-suspension cars cannot use conventional lowering springs. Check both systems before ordering.
Not sure what your XC90 has? Send us your VIN and we will confirm the brake package, suspension type, and engine before you order. Get a VIN check or browse all XC90 parts.
Where should you start?
You do not need to work through this guide in order. Start with the area you want to improve. For most XC90 owners looking for better handling, the rear sway bar is our first recommendation. Brake parts should be matched to the vehicle's rotor size, while performance parts should always be checked against the engine.
Use the section links above to jump directly to what you need. If fitment is unclear, send us your VIN before ordering.
Chassis: make the XC90 feel smaller
The XC90 is comfortable and composed from the factory, but its size and weight become noticeable when the road gets more demanding. Chassis upgrades can sharpen turn-in, reduce body movement, and give the SUV a more controlled feel without sacrificing everyday usability.

If you only make one handling upgrade to an XC90, make it this one.
- 25mm solid replaces 22mm hollow OEM
- 206 lbf-in vs 95 lbf-in OEM, 116% increase
- Replaceable poly bushings, AquaShield grease included
- Under an hour, common hand tools
Check before ordering: H7620901 Will NOT work with air suspension. R-Design / Dynamic suspension lowers only ~8-10mm vs ~30mm standard. Axle rating selection required: front GAWR up to 1420kg, rear up to 1670kg; placard usually in rear passenger door frame. Rear 10mm blocks included only if VIN requires. VP-137009 Install torque: 3 strut tower bolts 24Nm, 2 brace bolts 30Nm. H7600915 Fits XC90 with factory air suspension ONLY. 30mm additional lowering; Off Road mode stays at factory height.
Start with the rear of the chassis when appropriate. Increasing rear roll stiffness can improve rotation and reduce the XC90's tendency toward understeer. Always confirm compatibility with standard or air suspension.
Braking: confidence for a heavy SUV
At more than two tons, the XC90 asks a lot from its braking system. Fresh pads, rotors, and upgraded components can restore braking performance and improve confidence during repeated stops, towing, or spirited driving.

Porterfield AP1865 R4-S Front Brake Pad, 345mm/366mm Rotor, Volvo S60/V60, S90/V90, XC60/XC90, XC40/C40
Staff PickA great street pad upgrade with better bite than stock, without adding a bunch of noise or dust.
Check before ordering: Fits 345mm or 366mm front rotors only - confirm rotor size first. Not recommended for track use. Ships as a complete four-pad axle set.
Other Brake Recommendations
Rotora Street Challenge Front Big Brake Kit, Volvo XC90 2016+
For owners who tow or drive hard.
Check before ordering: Wheel clearance: smaller ring needs 19in minimum, 405mm needs 20in minimum, both with adequate offset - do NOT publish a specific ring size until the 380/390 conflict is resolved. Includes H2 ceramic pads and DOT stainless lines. Black calipers recommended for track use; other colours may discolour.
Brake Rotor Fitment & Options
XC90 brake packages vary by model year, trim, drivetrain, and wheel/brake configuration. Verify rotor diameter and brake package before ordering rather than relying on model year alone. Pads and rotors should be evaluated together.
Performance: sharpen power and response
Volvo's turbocharged, supercharged, mild-hybrid, and plug-in hybrid powertrains offer plenty of capability, but there is still room to improve response and consistency. Choose upgrades specifically for your XC90's engine and powertrain rather than assuming parts interchange across T5, T6, T8, B5, and B6 models.

A major cooling upgrade that helps keep intake temps down and power consistent, especially on tuned XC90
- 13,766 cm3 core vs 8,476 cm3 OEM, 62% larger
- 423 CFM vs 309 CFM OEM at 0.175 bar, 37% more flow
- All aluminium, continuous welds
- True drop-in, no cutting, all hardware included
Check before ordering: T8 only per workbook. Does NOT fit vehicles with a water-cooled charge air cooler integrated in the intake manifold.
Powertrain differences are significant across the XC90's production run. Confirm engine designation and model year before selecting intake, software, turbo, or related performance components.
Fitment: get the stance right
Wheels, tires, and spacers can dramatically change both the appearance and road feel of the XC90. The goal is a more purposeful stance while maintaining proper clearance, load capacity, and everyday drivability.

Gives the XC90 a wider, more planted stance while keeping proper hub-centric fitment
- True 63.4mm hubcentric bore, centres on the hub not the bolts
- Machined in the USA from aluminium/magnesium alloy, black hard anodised
- Includes a pair of spacers plus ten extended M14x1.5 bolts, 19mm hex
- Relief-cut hub face so removal stays easy
XC90 wheel fitment varies by wheel diameter, width, offset, brake package, and suspension configuration. Tire load rating is especially important on a vehicle of this size and weight. Always confirm clearance before selecting aggressive spacer or wheel setups.
Personalization: make it your own
Few vehicles offer as many opportunities for subtle customization as the XC90. Body parts are year-specific, so the year split matters more here than anywhere else on the car.

A quick way to tone down the factory chrome and give the XC90 grille a cleaner, sportier look.
- One gloss black emblem cover plus two grille slashes
- Double sided tape, sticks over existing trim
- Clean with an oil free soap before fitting
Many exterior components changed with trim level and later styling updates. Confirm R-Design, Inscription, Momentum, Ultimate, Plus, and other applicable trim or model-year differences before ordering.
Lighting: visibility with a factory quality finish
Lighting upgrades can improve visibility, replace worn or damaged components, or update the exterior appearance while retaining the clean OEM character of the XC90.

A simple, clean upgrade that projects the Volvo logo onto the ground when the door opens.
- Direct replacement for the factory lower door light
- No drilling and no additional wiring
- Waterproof and shock proof, resistors built in
- Two lights included, left and right front doors
Check before ordering: these only work if your XC90 already has factory lower door lights. Sold as a set of two.
Interior: improve everyday driving experience
You spend more time inside the XC90 than looking at it. Interior accessories and technology upgrades can improve convenience, protection, comfort, and usability while keeping the factory look intact.

Adds discreet, factory-style dash cam coverage without suction cups, hanging wires, or a bulky windshield-mounted camera.
- 4K UHD 2160p/30fps, f/1.6 lens
- Installs under the mirror assembly on factory wiring, no modifications
- 64GB card included and preinstalled, supports up to 128GB
- G-sensor locks collision footage from being overwritten
Check before ordering: 2016-2022 XC90 only.
Check model year and equipment before ordering electronics or trim components. Volvo updated infotainment, controls, interior details, and available equipment throughout the SPA XC90's production run.
Utility: get more from the XC90
The XC90 is as much a utility vehicle as it is a luxury SUV. Cargo organizers, towing equipment, roof accessories, and protection products make it easier to use that space for family trips, work, bikes, skis, or additional gear.

Secure barrier for dogs and cargo.
- 19mm steel outer frame with 50mm steel mesh, powder coated black
- Vehicle specific, no modification needed
- Made in the UK to ISO 9001
- All fixings and instructions supplied
Confirm whether the vehicle has factory roof rails, towing equipment, hands-free tailgate equipment, and other relevant options. Towing capacity also varies by powertrain and configuration.
Maintenance: protect the investment
Good upgrades start with a healthy vehicle. Staying ahead of normal wear and common service items keeps the XC90 dependable and gives performance, braking, and chassis upgrades a solid foundation to work from.

Volvo-approved 0W-20 oil made specifically for Drive-E engines, making it an easy choice for routine XC90 maintenance
- Fully approved to Volvo VCC RBS0-2AE
